THE F.M. ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

EASE FROM ACHES & PAINS

It’s entirely possible that you may already have an appreciation of The Alexander Technique. In which case your perception may well be that many people use it to help deal with back pain or postural problems. Of course, this is true. But what is not quite so well known is that The Alexander Technique can also alleviate painful joints, muscles, trapped nerves and Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). And that it can be effective in the relief of breathing disorders as well.

So if you have a specific ache or pain – unfortunately maybe even a serious one – it’s highly likely that you’ll find The Alexander Technique of great benefit.

A BETTER WAY OF LIVING

But The Alexander Technique can offer you far more than this. By recognising the prime importance of bringing your whole being into balance, The Technique will enable you to work in harmony with yourself, rather than, as is all-too-often the case, with different forces working in opposition. It is this new-found harmony that brings about a positive change in mental and emotional outlook. In short, The Technique fosters a better way of living.

For it is this lack of harmony within ourselves which is responsible for many of our ailments. Because whether they appear mental (like depression or anxiety) or physical (like neck problems or sciatica), it is by dealing with the whole self that The Technique achieves such consistent success.

So if you have a specific ache or pain – unfortunately maybe even a serious one – it’s highly likely that you’ll find The Alexander Technique of great benefit.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH FOR OVER A CENTURY

You might think that the holistic approach of The Alexander Technique is very contemporary, maybe even a little voguish. In fact, it is over a century old. Throughout this period, The Technique has often withstood stringent evaluation, and has always been thoroughly vindicated, winning many admirers in the process.

A HALLMARK OF A BREAKTHROUGH

In fact, as science gains a greater understanding of our postural mechanism and the way we use ourselves, so the evidence comes to support the developing theory and practice of The Alexander Technique. Because over the past hundred years, as science has advanced, so new discoveries have validated The Alexander Technique: a hallmark of a true breakthrough. Not so surprising really, when you bear in mind that even though F.M. Alexander was not a scientist, he wasexacting in his use of Scientific Method in developing his Technique.

FAQs

Naturally, you’ll have some questions about The Alexander Technique: the “how?”, “why?”, “what?”, and “how much?” of it. So we have answered some of the more frequently asked questions here.

What is The Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is a form of practical self-help which anyone can use – whatever their age or physical condition. People use The Technique for a variety of reasons. Some of the most popular include: postural or breathing problems, pain relief, performance enhancement or personal improvement.

How does it work?

The Alexander Technique works by bringing one’s whole self back into natural balance, before we adopted the everyday bad habits that over the years take their inevitable toll.

I’ve tried almost everything. Why should The Alexander Technique work where other treatments have failed?

Unlike specific treatments that isolate a specific symptom and attempt to deal with the effects, The Alexander Technique deals with the whole person. This means that you’ll see an overallimprovement in your well-being.

What happens during an Alexander Technique lesson?

During an Alexander Technique lesson your Teacher will make careful observations, and will guide you through everyday actions like sitting, standing, and laying down. In this way, you will have a practical demonstration of your true potential – which will only grow the more you practice The Technique.

How much does it cost?

Lessons are one-to-one, cost CHF 90.- and last 45 minutes. The majority of the complementary insurances in Switzerland reimburse the Alexander Technique. Please contact your insurance to find out more about it.

How many lessons will I need before I see an improvement?

As you might expect, this varies from person to person.

Why do I need a teacher? Why can’t I learn it myself?

The Alexander Technique undoes all the harmful habits we have acquired over the years. Because these habits are so ingrained, they feel natural. This means that doing the right thing would feel wrong.

“TOUT CE QUE NOUS FAISONS DANS CE TRAVAIL
EST EXACTEMENT CE QUI SE FAIT AU SEIN
DE LA NATURE LORSQUE LES CONDITIONS SONT BONNES,
LA DIFFÉRENCE ÉTANT QUE NOUS APPRENONS
À LE FAIRE CONSCIEMMENT.”

Stufen

In the last few days I had the pleasure to present the Alexander Technique to the teachers at the the Musikschule Konservatorium in Zürich. Working with talented and creative individuals, helping them to discover, to access and to express their potentials through our work is always a very rewarding experience. Becoming conscious of our unconscious Self is the first step towards growth and development at all levels.
I hope you will enjoy this simple way of presenting and structuring the Technique.

The power of transformation

On the 19th of November I had the privilege to present the SBAT/APSTA CH-Forum 2016 in Neuchâtel. Helped by my co-director Nathalie Sandoz and colleagues Kate Kelly, Marta Baron, Paolo Frigoli and Colin Beattie, I was able to share my experience and understanding of the Technique with a group of over 50 attendees, mainly teachers and a few trainees. A big thank you to Council for this opportunity and to Karin for being so helpful with organizing this event.
